What you're thinking of is probably a mixer, which is used to control the mix of all the instruments (volume, effects, etc.) A synthesizer is actually an instrument. Basically it plugs into a controller (like a keyboard) and you can model any sound you like. Now that probably didn't make any sense, did it?
